As a Doctor of Physical Therapy and certified yoga teacher, Dr. Nekita Sullivan offers a unique specialty which combines physical therapy and yoga. This superpowered holistic specialty utilizes yoga and physical therapy to target both physical and mental stressors in order to improve mental and physical health and wellness all-in-one…a one-stop wellness shop. Traditional health and wellness practices often offer treatments to target either physical or mental health in a separate manner. However, our human bodies are intricately related. Physical health affects mental health. Mental health affects physical health. It is extremely difficult to improve one without affecting the other. What I have found during my 20 plus years of experience as a Doctor of Physical Therapy is the mental component is just as important as the physical component when treating any type of dysfunction or illness.
For example, most of the patients that I treat have some sort of pain response. Pain usually brings along some anxiety. The physical pain and the mental anxiety are a couple. Both must be treated to produce an effective outcome. Yoga provides the breathwork and meditation to help decrease the anxiety associated with pain. This is one of the many non-traditional advantages of yoga therapy. It purposefully targets physical and mental issues simultaneously to provide a superpowered, holistic treatment for the whole person. Traditional treatments that focus on one component often lead to a residual dysfunction. This dysfunction may become recurrent and chronic with long-term effects. Another advantage of yoga therapy is that it can be an alternative or supplemental treatment utilized for those who do not tolerate medication well. It is also advantageous as it can produce some immediate results such as improved range of motion, flexibility, and a reduction in stress, tightness, or pain. Yoga therapy is appropriate for multiple ages: kids, adults, and seniors. It can also be utilized for groups, organizations, and corporations at the workplace. Yoga therapy sessions can be provided one-on-one or in group sessions on site, in the studio, and virtually. Services are even offered outdoors. Additional components can be added such as aromatherapy and music therapy to customize sessions based on individual or group needs.
